The annual Lions Junior Rodeo ushers in another busy weekend in the Lahontan Valley, starting first with the queen contest Friday night at the Churchill County Fairgrounds and action in the arena for the next three days.
“We have 125 kids coming,” said Jennifur Peek, the rodeo director. “The kids are coming from three states.”
States represented include Nevada, California and Idaho.
Peek said five contestants are vying for this year’s queen, and the crowning will take place on Saturday.
The rodeo’s first full day begins Saturday in the main arena at 8 a.m. The second go-around is Sunday at 8 a.m., and the Top 10 concludes the three days of rodeo on Labor Day beginning at 8 a.m.
Peek said the Tommy Lee Roping is Saturday at 6 p.m., and Family Night begins after the rodeo on Sunday. She said one of the fun events for the family is a rescue race. She said one person stands on a barrel and when the family member guides their horse next to the barrel, the cowboy or cowgirl hops on.
The categories include Pee Wee, ages 0-5; Junior Boys and Girls, ages 6-9; Intermediate Boys and Girls, ages 10-13; and Senior Boys and Girls, ages 14-18. Events include barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, team roping, figure 8, run ride lead, steer stopping, mutton busting, dummy roping, chute dogging and calf roping.
Entries for the annual Fallon Lions Club Labor Day parade are due no later than Saturday morning. Copies of the application may be found on the Fallon Lions Club Facebook pages. Individuals or groups may go by Chamber to pick up a copy, call 775-666-3068 to have one emailed.

The Monday morning parade begins at 10 a.m. at the northwest corner of the Old High School and travels on Taylor Street to Williams Avenue up to Homestead and the American Legion and then down Maine Street to end in front of the Old High School. The parade is one of the longest-running events of its type in Nevada, and every year, the Lions Club selects the theme which is “Celebrating the Survival of the Pandemic.” Awards will be given in the following categories: President’s Award, Best Use of Theme, Most Creative, Best Youth Group, Best Civic Group, Best Business Entry, Best Mounted Individual, Best Mounted Group, Best Antique Farm implement and Best Automotive entry.
Before the rodeo and parade, The Fallon Rotary Club is serving the annual Labor Day pancake breakfast in the large lot behind the Churchill County Library on South Maine Street. The Rotary Club needs a larger lot because of Gov. Steve Sisolak’s governor’s directives on crowd size and distancing.
The breakfast is from 7-10 a.m. and includes all-you-can eat pancakes, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit, coffee and Sandhill Diary white and chocolate milk. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children.
