Greenwave induction postponed

The Greenwave Hall of Fame has postponed its induction for both the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 Hall of Fame events, including the social mixer, football introduction and banquet.

The induction events scheduled for Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 at The Grid and Churchill County High School in Fallon, will be held at a later date during the spring 2022.

Steve Heck, president of the Greenwave HOF, said the postponement is a result of the rising cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in the Churchill County School District and high school.

“We are very saddened to have to postpone the induction ceremony,” Heck said. “When we began planning, we were very excited to give both last year's and this year's class the proper recognition they deserve.”

The availability of a school-district facility that meets current local and state protocol and the current bookings for other venues also remain as uncertainties. Heck said circumstances have changed since the committee established its original date. With the safety issues and the unknown, he said the HOF committee felt they could not continue with our plans.

The Hall of Fame committee, according to Heck, had concerns the HOF events would include a demographic that remains vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19 and the highly transmissible variant.

 “It was a very tough decision for the committee to make but ultimately, I believe, the right one,” Heck said.  “We will be working hard to reschedule in some manner to recognize our inductees.

Heck said the Greenwave Hall of Fame is committed to honoring those past outstanding athletes, administrators, coaches, officials and contributors who are part of these two classes.

“In the meantime, inductees should know that they are currently members of the Hall of Fame,” Heck added.
