February 9, 2012 was the last time Carson High School football had been able to defeat Reed.
That is, until Friday night.
The Senators were 0-9 in their last nine meetings against the Raiders, but pulled off a 17-13 victory.
The ending left the Senators in mayhem twice.
Reed started its final drive from its own 25 and moved the ball to about the Senators’ 25 as the clock wound down.
The Raiders lofted up one of their 53 pass attempts on the evening to the end zone, but Carson senior Michael Gully knocked it away.
However, the officials put two seconds back on the clock, giving Reed one more chance to score.
Once again, Carson watched the ball hit the ground and the celebration ensued.
“It was definitely mayhem. It was really cool,” said Carson High head coach Blair Roman. “It’s a big win and honestly, all week we felt like we had a really good chance to compete with them.”
How it unfolded
Carson marched right down the field and put seven points on the board to open up the evening.
The 70-yard drive finished when Jacob Campbell punched in a one-yard touchdown.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Senators’ defense posted a goal line stand with a fourth down tackle by Ben Heaton.
“That goal line stand and the blocked punt in the third quarter were the biggest changes in the game,” said Roman.
After that, Reed was able to tie the contest with a score right at the end of the half on a scrambling throw by Raider quarterback Armaan Bajwa.
The Raiders went ahead 13-7 in the third quarter, after a 20-yard touchdown on a wheel route but missed the extra point.
Carson responded with a nine-yard touchdown connection between Vinny Ferretti and Ben Heaton.
On the ground, running back Eric Hickson ran for 114 yards on 15 carries.
In the fourth, the Senators added a 32-yard field goal to gain a four-point lead, 17-13, forcing the Raiders to have to put the ball in the end zone one more time.
“It’s pretty obvious we are a much improved team the last two weeks,” said Roman. “Really our mindset was better this week. We felt like we could play with them and we did.”
UP NEXT: Carson (2-1) will host McQueen (4-0) next Friday night on homecoming for the Senators.
