Phyllis Lynn Furlong, wife of Sheriff Ken Furlong, died this week at age 64.
Born in Osceola, Arkansas, she moved to Carson City at age 6 when her father took a job at Meeks Lumber.
She and Ken met in junior high school and were married in 1975 after graduation. After he enlisted in the Air Force, the couple spent a number of years at different airbases around the country and in Germany.
While in Germany, she visited as many countries as she could and lived away from military installations, absorbing the culture and finding adventure across Europe.
She also enjoyed her time in North Carolina where she found a talent in floral design, eventually taking over management of a florist’s store
When he retired after 20 years in the Air Force in 1998 the family returned to Carson City.
She worked for a time in the Secretary of State’s office then moved to the education department as a budget analyst.
She volunteered with the Court Appointed Special Advocates program and was active in the Republican Party.
After her husband was elected sheriff, she became the department advocate for the K-9 program.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m., at Walton’s Chapel in Carson City.
The family asks donations be made to the Nevada Humane Society.
