The Carson City Senior Center recently received almost $745,000 in funding from state grants. On Tuesday, Gov. Steve Sisolak stopped by for a tour and to hear about the planned building improvements. “This nutrition grant gives us the opportunity to change the face of nutrition for congregate services,” said Courtney Warner, senior center executive director, in an impromptu speech. The larger portion of the funding, nearly $720,000 from the state’s share of American Rescue Plan Act money, will go toward dining room improvements. While that project gets underway, an additional $25,000 from the Community Recovery Grant program will keep the senior center’s Meals on Wheels program running more efficiently.

Sisolak extended his congratulations to Warner, then toured the kitchen area and helped pack food for the Meals on Wheels program. Seniors met him in the dining room afterward to shake his hand.Warner told the Appeal that, with the funding, the senior center may become the first in the state to offer menu choice for seniors with dietary restrictions and food preferences. “We’re just really proud and honored to be able to have this partnership,” she said. “We know there’s going to be a huge impact to our seniors.”
