PUBLIC NOTICE
Notice of Dixie Valley Toad Emergency
Listing and Proposed Rule and
Announcement of a Virtual Public
Informational Meeting and Public
Hearing on Proposal to List Dixie Valley
Toad Under the Endangered Species Act
On April 7, 2022, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service published in the Federal Register
an emergency rule that immediately listed
the Dixie Valley toad (Anaxyrus williamsi) as
endangered for a 240-day period under the
Endangered Species Act of 1973 as amended.
Concurrently, the Service published a proposed
rule to list the Dixie Valley toad as an
endangered species and is now taking public
comment to help the Service determine if current
protections as an endangered species
should become permanent. After the public
comment period, the Service will decide if the
proposed rule should be finalized, revised, or
withdrawn.
The Dixie Valley toad is the smallest of
the western toads and is endemic to
Nevada. Its range is restricted to a 760-
acre wetland complex which is fed by hot
springs in the remote Dixie Valley northeast
of Fallon, Nevada. The species is located on
lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management
and the Department of Defense. We
are seeking input from the public, Tribes,
other government agencies, the scientific
community, industry and other interested
parties on the proposed rule to list the Dixie
Valley toad under the regular rulemaking process.
The proposal and information on how
to submit comments can be found on https://
www.regulations.gov by searching under
docket number FWS-R8-ES-2022-0024.
Comments and materials from all interested
persons or organizations must be received by
June 6, 2022. Comments can be submitted
either to the Federal eRulemaking portal
at https://www.regulations.gov by following
instructions for submitting comments, or by

and Wildlife Service, MS: PRB/3W, 5275

We will post all comments on https://www.

On May 9, 2022, at 5 p.m. PST the Service
will hold a virtual public informational meeting
about the proposed listing rule. The informational
meeting will be followed by a virtual
public hearing at 5:35 p.m. PST during which
the public can submit verbal comments on
the proposed listing rule.
The Service will hold the virtual public
informational meeting and public hearing via
the Zoom online platform so that participants
can attend remotely. To listen and view the

during the public hearing by Zoom or telephone,
