On Monday afternoon a serious railroad accident happened in Empire. A train loaded with wood had started, and one of the upright posts being out, wood began to fall off. The engineer was signaled to stop and did so suddenly that a brakeman named John McMann was thrown from the train and struck by the car causing a compound fracture to the thigh. Doctors White and Davison were called to the injured man.

Miss Babcock wishes to have it well known that the kindergarten school will open on Monday morning at 9 o’clock. She is also anxious to have all the pupils promptly on hand at that hour.

Bicycle Race. The bicycle race between members of the band and athletic club will take place at the racetrack Sunday, the 22nd. The boys are practicing faithfully and as there is a good deal of rivalry between them, the race promises to be very exciting.

Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox today that a naval recruiting training station and technical school will be established in the Lake Tahoe area. The school will be established on the northwest side of Tahoe and originally have the capacity of 20,000 students.

Our city prisoners are now at work on Carson Street, under the superintendence of policeman Butts. There were only three out there yesterday. Four have been so employed. We understand that it is the intention of our authorities to make all prisoners work who are physically able to do so. Our readers are probably aware that this authority was granted by an act of our last legislature.

An Indian was run over and killed by one of the local trains yesterday near Franktown. Yesterday’s weather was decidedly weatherish. It was a cold, cloudy, mean sort of a day, and we haven’t much patience with a man who wouldn’t grumble at it.
