Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Nevada, Reno presents Day of Remembrance 2022, The Rescuers: Righteous Among the Nations — Non-Jews Who Risked Their Lives During the Holocaust.
This event will honor the past and explore the current threats to our nation and the world.
The free event s April 28 from 7-9 p.m. at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, 3800 S. Virginia St., Reno. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The event will begin with a welcome and introduction to the evening by Judith Schumer, chairperson of the Nevada Governor’s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust.
Righteous Among the Nations is an honorary title bestowed by Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem) on behalf of the State of Israel upon non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. The stories of six rescuers will be highlighted at the event.
Robert Braun, professor of sociology, political science and Jewish studies at UC Berkeley, whose book,
Protectors of Pluralism: Religious Minorities and the Rescue of Jews in the Low Countries During the Holocaust, tries to explain why some communities protected Jews while others did not.
