At the meeting of the board of city trustees on Monday evening, a petition signed by leading citizens was read to compel the ranchers west of the city to allow a portion of the water to flow through the city limits. It is to be hoped that this will be accomplished, if for nothing else than to cleanse the sewers.

An Indian named Bob was so drunk yesterday that he tore the short off from his person, presenting as beautifully a tattooed bust as a South Sea islander.

The Wells Fargo stage from Candelaria was held up last night. The robbery occurred when the stage had reached a point about a mile from Tonopah. The deed was done by one man who succeeded in getting away with the treasure box. The amount stolen was not stated. The sheriff and constable were notified and followed the trail into Tonopah. The robber is somewhere in the town, and they apprehend not much difficulty in detecting him and placing him under arrest.

Sheriff Cecil R. Thorington, captain Cal Brumbaugh of the highway patrol and W.B. Evans spent the greater part of last Friday night in the Twin Lakes area and in the country around Summers Meadows searching for parachutists which were seen to come floating down out of the sky around dusk. Campers also reported seeing flares and hearing a shot or shots that same evening around Twin Lakes.

Sunday afternoon, several women who were not like Caesar’s wife, could have been seen ending their way leisurely towards Chinatown, where it was their fixed purpose to intoxicate themselves with the fumes of that poisonous drug.

Friday night a moonlight picnic will be given at Cooks ranch, which should be one of the most enjoyable affairs office the season. The time has about passed this season when a moonlight picnic can be held, and this is the first and last of the season the pleasure lovers will be there in full force. For an all-around good time, a moonlight picnic leads the earth.

August Berning Jr. left Carson early this morning for Elko. According to the last reports from the Elko hospital, the condition of his brother, a Carlin constable shot while performing his duties as a peace officer, was very serious, and doctors held little hope for his recovery. Berning was shot after stopping two youths who stole a vehicle in Elko.

In what was described as “a bizarre combination of happenings” four Douglas County residents died in the past few days from traffic accidents and murders. Another person was injured in a rape/stabbing incident. In a large city this would be normal, but for tranquil Douglas County, the crimes and sudden deaths are a source of bewilderment.

Dangerous. There should be an ordinance passed prohibiting Indians from carrying weapons while within city limits. It is not an unusual thing to see a drunken Washoe with a revolver or huge dirk strapped to his side.

On Friday evening, the 29th inst., a farewell dance will be given to the departing school marms of Empire. The boys down at the seaport have ranged to make it an occasion of note, and they wish the rest of the valley to know that if they expect to be counted in, they had better be on hand. The young ladies will leave for their various schools before Monday.

Mathias C. Rinckel passed away at 10:45 a.m. its forenoon in the family home in which he was born 65 years ago the 15th of last April. Mr. Rinckel dropped into a sleep and the end thus came with unexpected suddenness, despite the fact that of his illness over a period of a year or longer and realization that survival beyond a few more days was unlikely.

Carson City officials hopes and plans for a city hall are changing direction, due to two factors. The first is a federal increase in contributions for improvement and expansion of the sewer treatment plant and the second is serious consideration to purchase a four-story building on West King Street.
