Both the Greenwave girls and boys varsity basketball teams opened the season with a perfect record in the Serpent Classic last week in Hawthorne.

The Lady Wave defeated Battle Mountain (55-16), Pershing County (61-39), Incline (56-5), Sierra Sage Academy (67-4) and Bishop Union (61-30).

“I liked our style of pace that we played. We like to push the ball,” Fallon coach Kevin Wickware said. “We have some confident basketball players. I like the depth of our team.”

Jada Anastasio and Madasyn Moyle each led the team in scoring during the three-day tournament, averaging 9.6 points per game while Zoey Jarrett averaged 7.4. Jarrett led the team in assists with a 3.4 average and Anastasio finished with 2.2 assists per game. Moyle, who made 41 percent of her 3-point attempts, was the team’s leading rebounder, grabbing 5.4 boards per game, and Vernita Fillmore and Mattea Cortez averaged 3.8 rebounds.

“Each day we had somebody different that scored 15-plus points. That was huge for us,” Wickware said. “If one kid is having an off day, we have three, four others to step up and fill that void.”

Defensively, Anastasio and Jarrett averaged 4.6 steals and Moyle had three steals. Jarrett, Cortez and Dylan Ekins-Faught each had a block.

“That is one thing our team is really good at is creating pressure and having offenses play faster than they want,” Wickware said. “We have brought back two kids from last year. We have 11 others trying to get varsity experience. When you have that group putting pressure on teams, that’s a good sign moving forward.”

The Greenwave boys also captured five wins during the tournament as they took down Battle Mountain (60-28), Virginia City (61-41), Yerington (51-34), Mineral County (47-35) and Sierra Lutheran (51-45).

“We just tried a combination of kids and tried to get playing time for everybody,” Fallon coach Chelle Dalager said. “Hawthorne is always competitive and fun to play. Every year is so different for the teams.”

White led the team with a 1.7 assist-per-game average followed by Bird at 1.3 and Ryder McNabb at 1.0.

Defensively, Barrenchea led the team in steals with three per game, Mackedon had 2.3 and Bird finished at 2.0. Mackedon also averaged nearly four blocks per game.
