In 1964, Bob Dylan wrote and released a song that was certainly fit for the time.
He begins each stanza addressing various audiences. “Come gather ‘round people…” “Come writers and critics...” “Come senators, congressmen…” “Come mothers and fathers…” Then, after eight more lines, each verse ends with the same words. “For the times they are a-changin.’”
So, here I am 58 years later. Please let me say, “AMEN!”
It is hard to believe all of the changes that have taken place in the last few years. Social, political, economic, environmental, and health issues have run rampant. And I never heard the words “supply chain” like I do now! “For the times they are a-changin.’”
In the midst of all this, I have discovered a great biblical word that causes me to put things in the right perspective.
Psalm 73:21-24
When my heart was embittered and I was pierced within, then I was stupid and ignorant; I was like an animal before you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you have taken hold of my right hand. You will guide me with your plan, and afterward receive me to glory.
Nehemiah 9:30-31
However, you remained patient with them for many years, and admonished them by your spirit through your prophets, yet they would not listen. Therefore, you handed them over to the peoples of the lands. Nevertheless, in your great compassion you did not make an end of them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and compassionate God.
When my humanity brings me all sorts of problems, when times seem hopeless, don’t forget what I have come to call “The Great Nevertheless.” However bad things are, nevertheless, God is still present, still hears his people, and still remains true to his nature of grace, love, and compassion. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
