The Oasis Academy basketball teams avenged last year’s series loss against Coral Academy to win the Battle for the Ore Cart on Friday at the city-county gym.
Although the Lady Bighorns lost the first game, 29-14, to the Reno school – the trophy is decided by both games combined – the Oasis boys outscored the Falcons in every quarter to win, 40-16. The Bighorns won the trophy with a combined 54-45 score.
Sophomore Fenn Mackedon led the way for the boys with a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 15 rebounds as the Bighorns won their second game in a row. All but three scored for Oasis Academy, which had freshmen Trevor Barrenchea, Matthew Bird and Kayden White contributing eight, five and four points. Bird also pulled down five rebounds and recorded six steals, and freshman AlexZander Sheldon-Davis had three rebounds.
After dropping a 51-42 contest to 2A Silver State on Dec. 10, Oasis Academy started its winning streak with a 54-28 win over Excel Christian.
Mackedon had another double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Bird also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bird was two steals away from a triple-double, and Barrenchea scored 10 points.
Statistics were not available for the girls’ game against Coral Academy.
The Bighorns basketball teams traveled to enCompass Academy on Monday and are off until Jan. 4 when they host Mammoth.
