It was a packed house Friday in First Judicial Court in Carson City as newly elected public servants were sworn in by District Court Judges James T. Russell and James Wilson.
“Public service is a responsibility to be taken very seriously,” Russell told those attending the brief ceremony.
Russell said public service requires respect for rule of law. It’s not about personal gain, he said, but betterment of the public. He encouraged those taking power to do their jobs “with honesty and integrity.”
Each elected official recited an oath and pledged to uphold the U.S. Constitution and state law. For city government, Ward 1 Supervisor Stacey Giomi was sworn in for a second term and later Ward 3 Supervisor Curtis Horton for his first term. Scott Hoen, new clerk-recorder, was also sworn in for his first term. Additionally, Assessor Kimberly D. Adams and Treasurer Andrew Rasor both took oaths of office.
For city law enforcement, Sheriff Ken Furlong was sworn in for his sixth term and District Attorney Jason Woodbury for his third.
For the Carson City School Board, District 1 Trustee Maria Lupe Ramirez was sworn in for a second term along with Molly Walt and Matt Clapham. Walt and Clapham are serving first terms for District 6 and 3, respectively. District 4 Trustee Richard Varner, an incumbent, was sworn in separately on Dec. 19.
During the ceremony, Russell teased Furlong that he might be the longest-serving sheriff in Carson City history. Furlong later told the Appeal he’s excited for the new year and to continue working with the city and what he lauded as the staff’s professionalism.
“It inspires us all to work harder,” he said.
Horton, who comes to the Board of Supervisors after a career in Public Works, told the Appeal he hopes to complete important work with other board members in the new year.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
The city-wide offices are nonpartisan.
