We had the pleasure yesterday of visiting and inspecting the finest passenger depot between the Missouri River and Sacramento. This is no vague assertion, but a positive facet established by actual comparison; in fact, it is maintained by some that the V&T Railroad Passenger depot at Carson is superior in accommodations and elegance to that of Sacramento City.

Mr. Sharp, senior of the Ormsby House has been for some months past planning to make some money out of Hank Monk by exhibiting him as a wonder to the people of the East. He has been reading the papers pretty thoroughly for the last few years. His idea is to present Hank Monk in a drama in which all the stirring scenes of his life will be represented.

The work of renovating the upper floor of the new Arlington building is about completed, and one who ever visited the hotel before the transformation and the present time, will see a new hotel. There is not a room in the house that has not been reappeared, recarpeted and in face, renewed from one end to the other.

Governor Carville was recently presented with a portrait of himself, painted in colors by George Alsop of Las Vegas from a photograph. The portrait will be exhibited in Reno next week.

Photo caption. Gov. Robert List faced the cameras and the crowd to give his farewell address as governor of Nevada before the Carson City Rotary Club. The governor stressed his price in his administration’s accomplishments and his willingness to make tough, sometimes unpopular decisions.

Go ahead: The enterprising Corbett Brothers and James D. Roberts are pulling down and clearing away the old railroad offices, and are going to erect upon the site, a 20x45-foot saloon and restaurant. (James D. Roberts lived in the yellow house on the corner of Carson and Corbett.)

In brief: Michael Barrett of Empire, arrested for attempted arson, has shown evidence of insanity.

Mr. Klein made a very interesting call at the Appeal office and left his card which was in the shape of a keg of beer.

Cause to complain: A compositor on the Appeal staff wishes the practice denounced of ladies holding their skirts too high when crossing a muddy street. The problem is that while watching a lady cross the street, the compositor ran his face against a tree in front of the Capitol square nearly knocking him senseless.

Doped fruits: People are beginning to see their food without artificial colorings. It will be noted in the shops that the olive oil can is marked “cottonseed oil.” Vermont maple syrup now comes marked cane syrup and strawberry jam is now branded apple with strawberry flavoring. Colored sausage, bleached fruits and bright yellow oranges will be a thing of the past.

Polio: A total of 156 polio cases were reported in Nevada during 1952—an all-time record. Counties topping the cases: Washoe County 63, Clark County 10, Mineral 7, Douglas 6, Elko, and White Pine 4 each and Ormsby had one.

Advertisement: “Baths! Baths! At Jacob Muller’s Hair Dressing and Bathing Saloon, Carson Street next door to the County Buildings, Carson City. Private entrance for ladies through the alley in the rear of Willis’ Drug Store. Thanking the ladies and gentlemen of Carson and vicinity for their liberal patronage heretofore bestowed upon me, I now respectfully invite a continuance of the same, as no pains or expense will be spared to make this the neatest and most comfortable establishment in the State of Nevada. Give me a call. Jacob Muller.”

Governor Kinkead: The people of Carson are discussing the subject of giving ex-Governor Kinkead a reception at the Opera House in recognition of their appreciation of his official course and his admirable traits as a gentleman.

The Appeal acknowledge receipt of a mince pie from a Carson lady. The pie was fully as good as the lady is beautiful.

Births: A son weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces was born at Carson-Tahoe hospital to Mr. ad Mrs. Alfred Perondi.

Preparations against fire: Mr. William Corbett provided a closer inspection of the new passenger V&T Depot and had brought to our attention an item or two of interest which escaped our observation before. The platform on the north Is ornamented by three gas lamps on massive iron posts, which shed light to the surroundings at night. The depot is secured against fire by four hydrants have been placed one at each corner. The water from an inexhaustible mountain Spring was turned on yesterday through pipes; so that if the building were to catch fire now, the chances are largely in favor of its being saved by its own resources. (And the Depot is still there today.)

Stealing chickens: A Chinese person was arrested near the residence of M.C. Gardner for chicken stealing. The case was up before Justice Cary, and the jury stood ten for acquittal and one for conviction. The District Attorney moved to dismiss the case.

130 Years Ago

Oldest watch in the world: In Empire, Sam Longabaugh of Empire has one of the most valuable relics in the country. It is a timepiece in the shape of a watch bearing the name of “Joseph Davis, London 1221.” The genuineness of said article is unquestioned, and its great value lies in the fact that the earliest record of a pocket timepiece is 1494 and is of Swiss make. He will have it on exhibit at the World’s Fair.

2,000 war pictures at the Grand: “Balkan War Scenes,” fresh from the front taken right on the battlefield and showing the Armies of the Balkan Allies in active engagement with the Turkish forces.

Photo caption: Three new schools will be built this year in Carson City for elementary pupils. They are designed by Edward S. Parsons, a Reno architect. Each building will contain approximately 8,300 square feet, will be of wood and steel frame with brick veneer, and will incorporate the most modern lighting and hearing facilities. Cheerful pastel colors will be used throughout. It is hoped that contracts can be let, and construction started by March 1, with completion before the fall term opens. (Later named Fremont, Gleason, and Corbett Schools.)
