The Mexican War Veterans had a meeting last evening in the Senate Chamber, and decided to have a grand ball on the 22nd of February. In addition to being the anniversary of Washington’s Birthday, this will also be the 31st anniversary of the battle of Buena Vista. Messrs Bollen, Zabrinskie, Patterson, Booker, Shepherd and Moore, were appointed to make all the necessary arrangements.

In Brief. Yesterday morning the thermometer stood at 5 degrees below zero in this city, and at Empire 8 degrees below. It was the coldest snap of the season. There is a boarder at the Ormsby House who has eaten 200 pounds of sauerkraut since the beginning of winter, so says Charley Sharp.

A Humboldt Novelist. C.M. Said, editor and proprietor of the Lovelock Tribune, has a novel with the sinuous name of “The Serpent,” in press at Chicago and it will soon be issued. This the author’s third published novel, and is said to be an improvement over the others.

A court of honor for members of Boy Scout Troop No. 38 will be held in the district court room of the Ormsby county court house Thursday evening. Tenderfoot investiture ceremonies will be conducted for eight boys. Several members will receive second class badges, and four Scouts will be given merit badges.

Laura Bright has been held over in the lounge of the Golden Spike in Carson City, where she has been featuring her own special type of entertainment.

A vote is expected Thursday on an ordinance that would require future gaming operations with more than 15 slot machines to incorporate at least 100 hotel rooms as part of the same property.

Accident or Alf Doten. — The Gold Hill News of last evening informs us as follows: Alf Doten, editor and proprietor of the Gold Hill Daily News, fell on the sidewalk in front of Gallup’s cigar stand last evening, shattering his left knee-cap. The injury is of the most painful character.

We are forced at last to acknowledge that they are the best fed editors in Nevada. Today the Chinese New Year begins. The dragon will be in evidence for the next week. Mrs. Brooks of Dayton was severely burned by the explosion of a stick of wood that contained some powder that was left for the wood choppers. The stove that contained the wood was wrecked.

Mr. Monk with Cobb for a backaction reports snow 80 feet deep at the summit and a snow storm still raging in the midst of a thunder storm; also that the Saints Rest is newly opened with a new mahogany front, and three bay windows. Cap’n Latham has brought his keep and other material for the “Hank Monk” from the other side of the Lake. Mr. Monk says the Cap’n showed his credentials. You can’t most always tell! They did have to shovel out a road for the teams. That’s a true fact!

Telephone Company. The Bell Telephone Company propose establishing a central office in this city, from whence will radiate telephones to any quarter desired. The telephone system is quite a feature throughout the country, and is in operation in most every town of any import.

The farmers up Carson Valley have a new pest that is giving them considerable work. It is the common field mouse. The little animals have infested a number of ranches and have almost ruined several alfalfa fields.

Addison Millard of Carson City won high scholastic honor at the University of Nevada this week when he was named to the institution’s honor roll for last semester. He is a sophomore at university and a member of Alpha Tao Omega fraternity.

Douglas County Sheriff Jerry Maple says its a danger to the community. Captain Ron Pierini fears for the safety of his staff. Lt. Stan Pope calls it “The Russian Front.” They aren’t complaining about the latest extortion attempt or a newly created war zone, they are talking about the Zephyr Cove substation building.

The final $1.4 million needed to finish expansion of the China Springs Youth Camp in Douglas County was approved recently. Work was approved by the 1999 Legislature.
