For the first time in two years the Carson High wrestling team will be headed back to the state tournament. Two Carson High wrestlers even picked up regional titles on their way down to Las Vegas. Lucas Wold had little trouble reaching the Class 5A North Regional finals at 120 pounds, winning his first two matches by fall. In the title round, Wold went up 4-0 in the opening period picking up a pair of nearfall points after getting a takedown. Leading 4-2 heading into the third round, Wold was again taken down tying the championship bout at 4-4 with less than 80 seconds remaining. However, a reversal inside of the final 10 seconds gave the Senator sophomore the regional title clinching points in a 6-4 decision win. Wold will head to the state tournament with a flawless record against Class 5A North competition in duals this season. Anthony Garrobo received a bye directly into the semifinals, leaving no doubt of a state tournament appearance. However, Garrobo used two decision victories to to secure his own regional title at 126 pounds. Garrobo’s win in the finals came over Douglas’ Conner Morris, marking the second time Garrobo has been able to defeat Morris this season.

Other qualifiers Jon Barnes-Hurt finished in third place to punch his ticket to the Class 5A state tournament next weekend. Barnes-Hurt’s only loss in the two-day event came in the semifinal. It didn’t rattle the junior as he responded with two wins by fall in the consolation semifinals and in the third place match. Both of the pins for the Senator wrestlers came in the first period. At 120 pounds, Nathaniel Rodriguez will be joining Wold at the state tournament after taking fourth place. At 170 pounds, Jeffrey Heaton was also a fourth place finisher, meaning he will be headed with the team to Las Vegas next weekend. Rounding out the state qualifiers are Toby Krehbiel (138 pounds) and Ayden Marhevka (152). As a team, Carson tied for sixth with 104 team points.
