With seven wrestlers qualified for the state tournament, Carson High wrestling will have a nice entourage heading down to Las Vegas.
The Class 5A state wrestling tournament starts with its opening rounds Friday at 11a.m. at Cimarron-Memorial High School.
Saturday will hold the consolation semifinals, third place matches, and of course, the championship bouts, which are expected to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Senators have two regional champs making the trek down to Las Vegas on the team bus in Lucas Wold and Anthony Garrobo.
Carson head coach Nick Redwine has been steadfast all season about the talent in the Senators’ middleweights and that has certainly come to fruition.
“I think Anthony and Lucas obviously have a good shot to do some damage down there,” said Redwine. “Jon Hurt was locked in at that regional tournament, too. … We have a shot to make some noise.”
Wold will hit the mat down in Las Vegas at 120 pounds while Garrobo will compete at 126.
As a sophomore, Wold is really in his first season as a varsity wrestler after not having a season as a freshman.
“It’s been my first high school season. It’s been fun,” said Wold. “It meant a lot because my family was there and you go down to state and have good seeding.”
Even in his first season at the varsity level, Wold’s goal isn’t anything short of a state title.
“Hopefully, to be in the finals,” said Wold. “I just have to have a good mentality and stay focused the whole tournament.”
Also a sophomore, Garrobo moved in from Arizona prior to the season, but didn’t blink in league matches, going unbeaten.
“It was hard, but it feels great having that regional title,” said Garrobo. “Always be the one to score first. Always be on top, don’t stop.”
With brackets already released, the Senators have already started to scout the brackets for their seven wrestlers.
“Oh yeah, we look at it,” said Redwine. “We just have to win matches. The toughest kids we have can match up with the toughest they have.”
Jon Barnes-Hurt, who was third at regionals, is anxious to continue proving himself to conclude his junior season.
Barnes-Hurt’s only loss came to an unbeaten junior from McQueen, Preston Harn, but Barnes-Hurt responded with a pin in less than 90 seconds in his third place match.
“There’s a couple things I could’ve done better, but it feels nice to be able to go and go with my team,” said Barnes-Hurt. “I was to get closer, tighter on everything I do. Plus, keep my mind right.”
Barnes-Hurt will wrestle at 145 pounds for the Senators once in Las Vegas.
Along with those three, Carson will have Toby Krehbiel (138), Nathaniel Rodriguez (120), Ayden Marhevka (152) and Jeffrey Heaton (170) all competing down at the state tournament as well.
“Marhevka came out of nowhere to qualify. That kind of blew me away a little bit,” said Redwine.
With a long van ride down to Las Vegas, Redwine is hoping he can continue to get to know his athletes during the hours of the trek down south.
“We usually use the bus rides to try and get to know the kids and we haven’t really had that,” said Redwine. “This group has kind of been closed off this year so I’m hoping we get to know them a little better on the ride down. I’m looking forward to the trip down.”
