Student speakers from Lions Clubs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton Valley recently competed at the zone level of the annual Lions District 46 Student Speaker Contest.
Viviana Castro, sponsored by the Carson City Host Lions Club, won the competition held on Feb 8 at the Gardnerville Station in Gardnerville. She was awarded a stipend of $125.
Castro is a member of the Carson High Speech and Debate Team.
Addy LaCost from Douglas High School placed second. She was sponsored by the Carson Valley Lions Club.
The students spoke on the topic of “Should Community Service Be a Requirement for High School Graduation?” Castro’s speech was selected by a panel of judges for its originality, main points being supported by evidence, conclusion, emphasis, voice control, enthusiasm, and poise.
She will go on to compete at the Lions District 46 Region level to be held March 12 in Reno. The region winner will be awarded a $1,250 scholarship and will advance to the district level where they will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
