Presidents and the pets they love

Lulu is a lovely one-year-old German Shepherd mix. She was pregnant when she came to CAPS and graced us with eight fluffy puppies. Lulu is strikingly beautiful with expressive golden eyes. She loves people, walks, and playing. Lulu is looking for a forever home where she is the only pet. Come out and take her for a walk.

Harry Truman is famous for his statement, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”
Dogs have been the most popular pet for presidents to have during their time in the White House.
In fact, 31 of the 46 presidents have had at least one dog in the West Wing.
The first to have a dog during his presidency was George Washington. Current President Joe Biden has a beautiful German Shepherd named Commander and a sleek cat named Willow. Earlier, the Bidens had adopted a shelter dog but needed to find him a different home, because he had trouble adjusting to White House life.
It is amazing how many different animals have called the White House home. Willow is the first kitty at the White House since 2009 when former President George W. Bush and India the black cat left office. The first presidential kitties belonged to Abraham Lincoln. He loved them so much that he fed them with gold White House forks.
President Barack Obama’s daughters wanted a dog so much they were able to lobby their father until he gave in, and they eventually got two Portuguese water dogs. They were thrilled!
More than cats and dogs have lived in the White House. John Quincy Adams’ wife had silkworms. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president, had an opossum. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, had a raccoon named Rebecca that walked on a leash.
Perhaps, the most famous for his pets was Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president. His six kids had snakes, dogs, cats, a badger, birds, guinea pigs, and more. When Roosevelt’s son Archie got the measles, his brother Quentin put the family pony on the White House elevator and brought him to Archie’s room to cheer him up.
The title for pets in the White House should be First Pet because they command the love of the commander.
