The burglary suspect shot by a Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputy on Tuesday has been identified as Luis Santana, a 21-year-old Carson City resident.
In a news release Wednesday, CCSO also said Santana remains in stable condition at Renown hospital in Reno. The release did not identify the deputy involved in the shooting.
The release said a briefing on the case is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. at the sheriff’s office.
Tuesday’s altercation began at 4:33 a.m. when deputies responded to a report of a person in a highly agitated altered state attempting to steal catalytic converters near the intersection of Adaline Street and North Curry Street.
Upon arrival, deputies found Santana had secured a hatchet to his wrist and was brandishing a machete, the release said. Santana was also holding a lit “blow torch” and attempting to burn a parked vehicle as well as his own car.
For over two hours deputies, including a member of the Mobile Outreach Safety Team, negotiated with Santana.
After less than lethal options were ineffective, Santana fled to the 200 block of Adaline Street where he confronted a 66-year-old resident who was standing at his open garage door, the release said. Santana raised the machete over his head and approached the victim in a threatening manner.  Fearing for the safety of the civilian, a deputy fired at Santana, striking him in the lower extremity.
Emergency first aid was administered by deputies before Santana was transported to Renown.
Due to the injuries, Santana has not been formally booked into the Carson City Jail. CCSO said Santana will face the following charges: Assault with a Deadly Weapon Against an Elderly Person; Arson Third Degree; Arson Fourth Degree; and Obstructing a Public Officer.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada State Police are conducting the investigation into the shooting.  Anyone who witnessed or has information in this case is encouraged to contact Detective Nadine Jenkins, njenkins@douglasnv.us or 775-782-9926.
