Carson City School District officials confirmed Wednesday a Carson High School student was arrested for bringing a gun to school.
No injuries occurred from the early morning incident. According to a statement from the school district, school resource officers were on scene immediately and secured the situation and the school never was placed on lockdown.
As of 11 a.m., Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, who was out of town at the time, told the Appeal he had been briefed on the situation and said the event “ended very quickly,” with school resource officers investigating from where the gun was retrieved.
“The important piece is the school is very safe,” Furlong said. “The situation is still being investigated by school resource officers, along with the school. I expect a briefing later this afternoon.”
The district’s statement said officials continue to work with local authorities and students and staff who were directly involved in the incident are being provided social and emotional support as needed.
"We are grateful for the swift actions of school officials and the support of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office," Superintendent Richard Stokes said in a phone message to families. "Thanks to the quick action of staff and school resource officers, the student was disarmed. Law enforcement and school staff ascertained the student acted alone and there was no suspicion of any coordinated effort involving other parties.
