Body camera footage shows a suspect with a machete with an 18-inch blade running toward a homeowner seconds before he was shot by a 12-year law enforcement veteran last week in Carson City.
The footage released by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Monday shows a 12-year law enforcement veteran running after the suspect, Luis Angel Santana, 21, of Carson City, after Santana took off running from deputies.

Deputies fired pepper balls, bean bags and 40 mm impact projectiles, the sheriff’s office said, but the footage shows Santana run toward a homeowner on Adaline Street.
Deputy Jonathan Tripp’s body worn camera footage shows Tripp running toward Santana after deputies realized there were people outside their homes.
Tripp closes but fired more than 20 yards from Santana, hitting him twice in the lower extremity.
Deputies administered first-aid to Santana before he was transported to Renown Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.
Deputies were initially called to the area on Feb. 22 at 4:33 a.m. for a suspect stealing a catalytic converter from car lot. A man was reported to be in a “highly agitated altered state” and had a blow torch.
Upon arrival, deputies found Santana with a hatchet tied to his wrist and was brandishing a machete. He attempted to burn a parked vehicle along with his own car.
Deputies with the Mobile Outreach and Safety team attempted to negotiate with Santana for more than two hours before deputies tried to subdue him with pepper balls.
Santana has not been booked into the Carson City Jail. Anticipated charges include assault with a deadly weapon against an elderly person, third-degree arson, fourth-degree arson and resisting a public officer.
The case is being investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada State Police Investigations Division.
