The Capital City Community Band will present its annual “Salute To Young Musicians” concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6 in the Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.
The concert will feature Kyra Fields performing the Rondo from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, the Carson High School Winter Drum Line, and the Western Nevada Children’s Theater. The concert is free and open to all members of our community and surrounding areas.
The Capital City Community Band was founded in 1978 by Richard Doede as a venue for adults who played in high school and college but had discontinued due to work and family obligations. The band started with 15 members but within a few years had grown to 50 members. In 1988 the band represented the U.S. at Expo 88 in Australia and traveled to Switzerland in 1995. Richard Doede retired in 2018 and the current director, Nick Jacques, took over the baton to continue this community tradition. The band never charges for concerts and relies on donations to pay for the use of the community center and to purchase music and equipment. Unfortunately, it costs to provide free entertainment.
As a music educator, Richard Doede started the “Salute To Young Musicians” concert in 1982 to show young musicians they could always have music in their life, no matter their career choice.
“Without young people involved in music, our community groups would cease to exist. This is our way of honoring those students who enjoy making music and to show them music can always be a part of their life no matter what career path they choose,” Jacques said. “March is ‘Music In Our Schools’ month, which celebrates the important role of music education. Music must always be a part of every student’s life.”
Fields, 17, is the daughter of Rick and Carrie Fields and began studying the clarinet in the fifth grade at Fritsch Elementary School. She has been selected for the Northern Nevada Honor Band for seven years and the Nevada All-State Band for four years. She will continue her music education at UNR in the fall. Kyra is a member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA of 4.975.
The band will perform a variety of music including “Fantasy On A Fiddle Tune” and “Star Trek.”
The concert is free, but donations are happily accepted.
