Junior Sarah Polish took the National Trig Star Champion Test last week. Polish earned the local and state champion before school got in May. Each of those exams earned her a $100 prize. The National Trig Star Exam was proctored by Mr. David Crook with the Nevada Association of Land Surveyors for the National Society of Professional Surveyors. They are the group that sponsors the exam. The top student in the nation receives a $1,000 prize with the teacher of the winning student also receiving a prize. Oasis Academy was proud to have the top three students in the state for the Trig Star Exam this year. Sarah Polish, Natalie Jacques and Kennadee Irving all received cash prizes for finishing in the top. “We really have a lot of hardworking and talented students; it was great for our best and brightest math students to have an opportunity to shine and show off their knowledge!” said Math Teacher Mr. Evan Brandt.

Alumni Feature: Jessica Gomes Oasis Alumni Jessica Gomes is heading to Kansas State University to begin her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program in August. Gomes graduated from Oasis Academy in 2017 and from the University of Nevada, Reno in December 2021. The Fallon native plans to return home after completing vet school. “I plan to return to Fallon to live and hope to work with small animals as well as specialize in pocket exotics (ex: reptiles, hamsters, and ferrets),” she said. “This will require additional schooling beyond K-State's four-year program and a residency with a veterinarian that specializes in exotics.” Gomes currently works at Moffitt Animal Clinic in Fernley where she has received valuable experience in the field to prepare her for school. She started the job upon graduating from Oasis Academy College Prep. For students interested in applying to veterinary medicine schools, Gomes has advice. “Keep a detailed log of all activities, jobs, and experiences that could be used to fill out applications,” she said. “The VMCAs required specific start and finish dates for all my activities and experiences, having those dates all in one place would have been really helpful. “Having a well-rounded resume including community service, extra-curriculars, hobbies, and work experience makes future applications much more competitive.” Gomes said her education at Oasis prepared her for being successful in college. “ Being familiar with all available resources and knowing how to utilize them is important,” Gomes said of her time at Oasis. “I am so grateful for all of the wonderful teachers that have gone above and beyond for me throughout my schooling.” Students Earn Campout in the Classroom Students in Mrs. Santos's third grade class earned their final class reward for the year. The students chose to have a camp day with flashlight reading in tents, blankets, stuffed animals, and yummy s'mores, and cotton candy. Mrs. Santos spent the evening before setting up several tents in her room for class to nestle into for the day’s activities. “These kinds of activities create a cohesive learning experience and foster a love for reading and learning. Kids are excited to be at school and are motivated,” said Chief Academic Officer Rochelle Tisdale.
