Members of the Fallon Chamber of Commerce learned more about the Churchill County Museum and its offerings at June’s monthly luncheon.

Sue Chambers, interim museum director, encouraged the chamber members to look at the various displays, which will give them a better understanding of the county.

Chambers explained the function of the Churchill County Museum Association, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Through its programs, Chambers said the museum lives up to its mission statement: “To help people forge meaningful connections to Churchill County’s natural and cultural heritage, strengthen community ties and shape its future.”

According to Chambers, the museum association owns many of the artifacts, art, historical photos and archives. The building, she said, is owned and maintained by Churchill County. Chambers encouraged her guests to join the Churchill County Museum Association, which has different levels of membership.

Outside on the south wall, Chambers said a mural project is underway where local artists submit their artwork based on a theme. She added the museum store contains a number of books written by local and regional authors, and patrons will also find jewelry and clothing such as T-shirts and ballcaps.

Chambers said the Bureau of Land Management continues to offer a tour on the second and fourth weekends of Hidden Cave, east of Fallon. A virtual tour of the cave has been developed.

During the year, Chambers said the museum has many fundraising events such as the spring luncheon with a speaker and the Black and White Ball.

The museum has one to two speaker series each year. In the fall, the museum featured speakers discussing water and the important of the area’s “liquid gold” to ranchers and farmers. A permanent display on the Newlands Project recently opened. In the spring, four local and regional military authors discussed their books and the process of writing on their subjects.
