Hunter Drost
From working as a financial adviser to being part of Fallon’s elite volunteer firefighters to now pursuing his private pilot’s license, Oasis alum Hunter Drost is doing it all with purpose.
“Being able to help people is the only goal I continue to have,” Drost said.
Drost graduated from Oasis Academy College Prep in May 2018 with both his high school diploma and Associate of Arts from Western Nevada College. The focused student then graduated in two years from the University of Nevada, Reno with his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a journalism minor in May 2020.
Crediting the Oasis staff and administration, Drost said he’s grateful for the opportunities he might not have otherwise had, if he had not attended Oasis.
“I’m grateful for the staff and administration as a whole for creating an abundance of opportunity in and outside of the classroom,” he said. “This allowed for me to have the flexibility to take on roles and obligations that often took me away from the classroom in a new learning environment.”
Those experiences are also part of advice he has for future students.
“You are at a unique time in your life where you have the freedom to try anything and everything your heart desires, find out what it is you love doing, and go for it,” Drost said.
So what’s next for the alumni?
“I am planning to start a master's program for fall of 2023,” he said. “With the increasing availability of remote/hybrid programs there are multiple options to research and consider. Other than that, I plan to continue working and serving the people of Fallon in my role as a financial adviser. I love my career and have no plans of doing anything else.”Courtesy
Oasis FFA attends Nevada FFA Summer Leadership Camp.
Oasis FFA learns over the summer
Although school is out for the summer, Oasis FFA has not slowed down. The group has continued to learn and work through both the Nevada FFA Summer Leadership Camp at Lake Tahoe and the chapter’s local officers retreat.
The annual Nevada FFA Summer Leadership Camp is held at the 4-H Camp in South Lake Tahoe. The camp allows for the students to develop and foster skills with the FFA community from other regional chapters. Along with leadership skills the 4-day camp includes training for chapter officers and the elections are held for each of the zone officers.
"This year’s Summer Leadership Camp for FFA was an amazing experience, it is a great opportunity to not only grow as a young leader and learn how to better serve the Ag industry and your community, but an overall fun experience,” said FFA Vice President and senior Eddie Morrow. “We meet people from every part of the state and from every background. The friendship and lessons we learn makes the camp hard to leave and makes sure everything you learn sticks with you. There are great activities, and everyone finds something they really enjoy."
Quickly following the state level camp, the Oasis Chapter also held its officers retreat. The day focused on planning activities for the next school year. Including planning for the annual FFA week in February.
"FFA related activities are always one of my favorite things to do,” said FFA President and senior Stacie Bogdanowicz. “They never fail to send us home with lasting memories and an exceptional leadership experience. This year, we are looking forward to big things within our chapter, as our officer team is already hard at work planning things for the upcoming year. I am beyond excited to see how our chapter grows throughout the year and I look forward to growing alongside everybody else."
Dakota Groom
Oasis Welcomes Dakota Groom
Oasis welcomes Dakota Groom to teach middle school math for the 2022-23 school year. Groom has been teaching for six years. She loves animals, chocolate, Disney everything (but mostly Stitch), and grumpy cat. In her free time she likes to read, craft, be outdoors, and spend time with her animals, friends and family.
“We are so very excited to have Dakota join the Oasis team,” said Oasis Chief Academic Officer and Principal Rochelle Tisdale. “We are enthusiastically embracing all the mathematical knowledge she is bringing with her. Her skills will be invaluable in helping enhance our students' education.”
