The eighth annual Community Wide Reunion in August may be one the largest gatherings of former Churchill County High School graduates and friends of the Greenwave.

Sue McCormick, who had been a driving force behind the event since 2014, said almost 20 classes have signed up for the reunion, which is Aug. 19-21 at Oats Park.

She said the committee has heard from classes who attended CCHS in the 1950s, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1992, 2000 and 2012.

What started out with a small number of classes in 2014 now encompasses many Greenwave classes who will celebrate, for example, their 30- and 40-year anniversaries. Even if a class hasn’t signed up, McCormick said no one will be turned away.

“We like to set up in chronological order, and it’s easy for me to see the classes and also those that were before and after,” she said.

McCormick emphasized the reunion weekend is not solely for former Greenwave students. She said teachers, parents and friends in community are invited to three-day event beginning with the opening night at the Fallon Theatre. Dineen and Larry Little, local musicians who play with The Great Basin Band, perform on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

“The theater always does something with a band,” McCormick said. “Last year’s band was very successful, and this year’s band will be a great way to start the reunion.”

McCormick said many of the returning classes also reserve Friday for something special such as dinner or group activity for graduates to reconnect with each other. She said other classes are planning breakfast Sunday or activities.

The main day for reunion activities kicks off from 8-11 a.m. with a catered breakfast at the Oats Park Art Center’s Lariat Courtyard. Also that morning near the arts center will be a show and shine car show with antique tractors. During the day, tours and activities are scheduled for the Churchill County Museum, the Old High School, Oats Park Arts Center, the Douglass House, the Old Post Office, Cottage School, Frey Ranch, Fallon Police Department and the Fallon-Churchill Volunteer Fire Department. She said Mayor Ken Tedford will offer tours of the Fallon City Hall.

McCormick said the classes begin gathering at Oats Park at 4 p.m. This year’s reunion will honor the class of 1962. In addition to the classes, McCormick said the Greenwave Hall of Fame, which will induct its fourth and fifth classes in September, will be selling T-shirts. She said many of the classes bring their own food, but beer and wine, along with food, will also be sold

Mile Twelve, this year’s musical group, begins playing at the Oats Park Centennial Stage at 7:30 p.m.

According to their biography, Mile Twelve is a modern string band from Boston and winners of the 2020 IBMA New Artist of the Year award. Mile Twelve’s name comes from a mile marker found on Boston’s southern border. In addition to touring North America, the band also performed in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The free performance is presented in cooperation with Tedford, the city council and city of Fallon.

Earlier in the day at 3 p.m. members of Mile Twelve will conduct a conversation about their music and band, and the arts center will be open for a tour of the galleries.
