Carson Street was lined with blues, yellows, and honking cars at noon on Tuesday. Residents met downtown near the Capitol to show their support for Ukraine as it resists invasion from Russia.
“I wanted to do something that I felt like could bring the community together to show solidarity and support for the Ukrainian refugees and also to support democracy,” said organizer Melanie Darquea.
She said that she wanted to give residents a forum to express their feelings.
Reno and Las Vegas held their own rallies over the weekend, each drawing more than 100 Nevadans in support of Ukraine.
On Feb. 24, Russian president Vladimir Putin launched an attack against Ukraine, striking major cities including the capital, Kyiv.
He called the invasion a “special military operation,” and three days prior to the attack, he said in a televised address that Ukraine is an “inalienable part of (Russia’s) own history, culture, and spiritual space.”
Ukrainians have armed themselves against the invasion, and refugees are fleeing the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared martial law.
The U.S., U.K. and EU have all declared sanctions against Russia, targeting the country’s banks and imports like aircraft and technology. The U.S. has sent weaponry to Ukraine.
Carson City residents at the rally called for citizens to join the effort by boycotting Russian goods.
