The Episcopal Church: Seats in this church being all taken up and so many applications for pews occurring, it has been decided to enlarge the building if sufficient funds can be raised for the purpose. We hope fundraising can be done without calling upon the citizens of Carson generally.

In disguise: A stylish young fellow from San Francisco has been in this city, frequenting the saloons and talking like a blood. It was discovered that he is a woman, and she hurriedly left on the 5 o’clock train for Virginia City.

Goodsprings: The Cinnabar find is turning out well. As depth is attained, the prospect is getting brighter, and the ore exceedingly fine. There is excitement in that section over the find and development.

Space shuttle mission: NASA gave the shuttle Columbia astronauts permission to proceed with their full mission to renovate the Hubble Space Telescope despite clogged plumbing in their ship. Debris in the line from a welding job during Columbia’s overhaul resulted in a violation of flight safety rules.

Miss Carrie Moore: This lady has proved herself to be all that the newspaper reports have said of her. Her skating is grand. Her velocipede riding is said to surpass anything of the kind ever seen. Come one come all to the social dance after the rink exercises. Music will be by the Cotillion Band.

Born: On Thursday night, a daughter was born to the wife of Peter Spargo of the Mint. Mr. Spargo has two sons and three daughters — a queen full on jacks.

St. Patrick’s Masque Ball: James Wiggins, the Empire entertainer, has made preparations to give the public a first-class masquerade on the 17th. The well-known caterer, Mrs. Koahl, will spread one of her homemade banquets for those who desire to enjoy it. Costumes can be secured at the hall and plenty of stable room is at hand for carriages.

A dangerous roof: The old porch in front of the building occupied by John Rosser collapsed under the weight of snow and landed on the sidewalk. This block of property is in a sad condition of decay and needs the attention of the owners.

Birthday: Bobby Morgan’s third birthday was appropriately observed at the home of his parents on Plaza Street. Decorations were in the circus theme. Invited were Billy Spain, Albert Grenade, Judy Ternau, Johnny Ternau, Richard Arthur, Susie Dolan and Mesdames Jane Ternau, Shirley Grenade, Verlene Arthur, Phyllis Berning and Dorothy Dolan.

Burglars about: During the absence of Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Brown from their residence, it was burglarized and $268 belonging to Damen Lodge No. 2, K. of P., of which Mr. Brown is Treasurer, and also some funds belonging to the Curry Engine Company, which he held in trust — justice is hoped for.

Miss Mary Antonio French, a San Francisco girl, assumed the black veil at St Mary’s convent. The confirmation took place during High Mass and the little chapel was filled with friends, anxious to witness the ceremony which shuts her young life out from the world. She will be known as Sister Mary Antonia.

Killed by giant powder: Paul Connelly, a 35-year-old miner employed at the Tallo Ho mine near Reno was blown to fragments by the explosion of giant powder. The man attempted to bite a cap on the fuse and set off the deadly fulminate.

Tree City USA: Carson City has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation — for the eighth year. In order to become a Tree City USA, four standards must be met. There has to be a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
