Carson High softball is now under the direction of Scott Vickrey, a former coach for the Senators dating back to 2012.
Vickrey started as an assistant in 2003 before coming back as an assistant until 2012.
“The opportunity came up. I called my wife, first, then my assistants,” said Vickrey. “Now the old squad is back in action. It’s kind of cool and fun and I hope the kids are having a good time.”
With Vickrey taking over in the dugout and both Kailee and Kedre Luschar off at the University of Oregon, Carson has entered a new era on the softball field.
“We’ve got some real solid senior leadership and some talented young players coming in,” said Vickrey. “It’s starting to come along. We’ve got a team that is really flexible where kids can play.”
Even with some talented pieces gone from a season ago, the Senators have plenty of seniors who have one more year to make their mark.
That’ll start in the circle with senior returning pitcher, Caydee Farnworth, who has already signed her Letter of Intent to pitch at Fort Lewis College (Division II) next year in Colorado.
Farnworth was one of the top pitchers in the North last season and has one more year in the circle to try and lead the Senators after tossing a 3.12 ERA in 92 innings last season.

Through the lineup
Along with Farnworth, senior Shannen VonDuering is expected to throw some innings in the circle while locking down a middle infielder position otherwise.
VonDuering hit for a .411 average last season with 14 RBIs and six doubles over 18 games played.
Carson will be plenty flexible this season as Corine Doran, last year’s catcher, is anticipated to hold down the hot corner at third base.
Doran hit over .600 from the dish last season and drove in a team-high 21 RBIs.
Around the Senators’ pitching staff, viewers can expected to see Sofia Morrison and Kiele Franco.
“We’re seeing who has the hot stick. We’re trying to get some people some playing time and see if we can put the pieces together going into regionals,” said Vickrey.
Fellow seniors Kennedy Redican and Kayce Johnston will be staples in the lineup, especially after homering in the season opener against McQueen.
While the Senators fielded a specific lineup in the season opener, Vickrey said Carson will not be limited to one look.

Around the league
Douglas and Spanish Springs are expected to be at the top of the Northern Class 5A league.
Hailey McClean, last year’s Gatorade Player of the Year, returns for the Cougars of Spanish Springs.
Along with those two, Vickrey expects another team from the North to push Carson over the course of the season.
“I do know that Douglas, Spanish Springs and Reed will be the teams to beat,” said Vickrey. “Obviously, McQueen showed us today … they can contend.”
