CCSD School Board
At their first meeting of the month of March 9, the Churchill County School District trustees took action on the following agenda items.
• Recognized Churchill County High School archery team and the Scholastic Art Award winners. (Individual articles forthcoming)
Changed the April 13 meeting to April 4 at 5:30 p.m. .
• Approved a request to the Nevada Tax Commission to renew the residential construction tax for the next four years. The tax is $900 per newly built building. Comptroller Christi Fielding said her office is looking at ways to control costs for the Fiscal Year 2023 budget.
Portland Cello Project
The Portland Cello Project will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Oats Park Arts Center’s Barkley Theatre. A free conversation with the artists is slated for 3 p.m. The box office, Art Bar and galleries open at 7 p.m. The conversation focuses on “Classical and Beyond, New Repertoire for Cello from Bach to Brubeck.”
Tickets are members $17 and nonmembers $20. Youth and students with valid student ID are $10. Tickets are available at Jeff’s Digitex Printing or call Churchill Arts Council at 775-423-1440.
Future events:
• The award winning and highly acclaimed Le Vent Du Nord, a leading force in Quebec’s progressive francophone folk movement, is the next performance at the Barkley Theatre. They will be in Fallon on April 23.
• Mindy Nettifee is a poet, artist educator, depth somatic researcher and practitioner, and a psychonaut. She holds a doctorate in depth psychology with a somatic studies specialization, and recently published her doctoral research Voice as Embodied Sense – Rethinking Voice and Language in Trauma Healing. She is also the author of three full-length collections of poems.
She will present a poetry reading on April 30 from 5-7 p.m. The presentation is free.
• Timothy Berry’s Vanishing Territories: Paintings and Works on Paper opens April 9.
A panel discussion and reception for the artist is May 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the E. L. Wiegand Gallery with the discussion beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Democratic caucus/convention
The 2022 Churchill County Democratic Precinct Caucus/County Convention will be held April 2 with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the Old Post Office, 90 N. Maine St.
All registered Churchill County Democrats are invited.
Anyone not registered may register at the caucus. Masks are requested.

Read
“1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” encourages youngsters to read age-appropriate books before entering school. Book titles are suggested and offered by library staff. Sign-ups accepted at any time.
In-person “Storytime with Ms. Jes” offered Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Children’s Librarian Jeslyn MacDiarmid reads picture books to children and offers a craft to accompany most stories. Each session is recorded and posted to the library’s YouTube account for on-demand viewing at your convenience.
Reading with Rover takes place on April 14 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Children read books to dogs to improve their reading skills and confidence in reading to a decidedly captive audience.

Learn about 3D printing at drop-in participatory workshops on April 6 and 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. Using the library’s 3D printer, make objects, both useful and pretty, and see about this popular technology.
3D printing will also be featured during the STEAM session on April 22 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Knitting Club meets on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m. All are welcome from the beginner to advanced skilled folks.

Join the Churchill County library, local youth artists and the Karma Box project on April 3 from noon to 3 p.m.
Make a non-perishable food donation to the Karma Box or a cash donation to the Churchill Library Association and receive a bowl of soup, a slice of bread and you keep the hand-made bowl.
Empty Bowls is a movement by artists to raise awareness for hunger in the community. The event is sponsored by the Churchill County High School Ceramics Class students who made and donated the bowls, the Fallon Chamber of Commerce Karma Box and the Churchill Library Association.

On April 30, the library joins forces with the Churchill Arts Council to bring poet Mindy Nettifee to the Oats Park Art Center from 5 to 7 p.m. for a poetry reading.
April’s featured artists are “Flying Artists,” a group of Fallon and Fernley artists working in watercolor, oil, pen-and-ink, acrylic and pastels who have their paintings on display throughout the library.

Herds & Harvest program
The University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Herds & Harvest Program is hosting a Farm to Fork Certification Program, 6-8 p.m., on Wednesdays. The courses in this program will offer information for beginning farmers and ranchers on the process of livestock and poultry production, from raising livestock to selling the products on the market.
The program’s courses will be conducted via Zoom and will draw upon the knowledge and experience of established Nevada livestock and poultry producers and University experts. There will also be an in-person field trip touring local farms and ranches. Participants who complete the course will receive their Farm to Fork Level 1 Certification.
March 30: Farm financial management in the 21st century: focusing on financially building a farm, building business skills and assets, estate planning, and balance and cash flow basics. University students will provide financial analysis of different agricultural ventures..
