After a busy first inning, Carson High and Bishop Manogue softball traded scoreless innings through the second, third and fourth before the Seantors’ broke the game open.
In the bottom of the fifth, Carson jumped all over the Miners posting eight runs, which led to an 11-1 win in five innings for the Senators.
Though the contest was a non-league matchup, Carson saw a few takeaways that are definitely bright spots for the team through its first four games.
“It all blurred together. We had so many chances with people on base that it was frustrating we couldn’t get people around,” said head coach Scott Vickrey. “Then, a couple big hits and we put some people across the plate to get our first home win.”
It marks the first home victory for Vickrey since his return to the coaching staff of the team.
Reyes deals in the circle
Isabella Reyes hurled 65 pitches in the five-inning win where she struck out eight batters Tuesday afternoon.
The Miners mustered an opening run in the top of the first, but the sophomore pitcher settled in and just three hits in the next four innings.
“I was hoping she was going to give me three or four (innings),” said Vickrey. “Then we talked it over with the coaches and she was working today. It was a good outing for her.”
At the dish, Reyes helped herself out with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to put Carson in front, 2-1. Reyes ended the evening 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
The Senators put together 17 hits as a team in the win.
Leading the way was Corine Doran, who was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Carson.
Shannen von Duering was 3-for-4 with a double as well for the Senators while Kiele Franco and Sophia Morrison each drove in a pair of runs.
Every Senator hitter that registered an at-bat, tallied at least one hit for Carson in the win.
“We hit the ball well today,” said Vickrey. “Our bats kind of woke up. We also brought up some JV players who got some good experience on the bases.”
