Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, have introduced legislation designed to help airports and other transportation centers catch human traffickers.
She said victims are commonly trafficked on commercial aircraft and public transportation. The legislation would provide transportation hubs with dedicated funding to combat human trafficking and increase awareness.
Cortez Masto said she has talked with victims who confirmed to her that airports and transit centers are places for victims to seek help and for trained staff to intervene, “but only if there is greater awareness of what victims need.”
Cornyn said airports can play a vital role in identifying and stopping human trafficking.
Cortez Masto said Harry Reid airport in Las Vegas has already implemented prevention policies including a human trafficking hotline phone number on every restroom stall door.
In addition, the Reno airport has been designated a safe place, providing aid for youth who need help escaping abuse.
The legislation would provide $10 million to help raise awareness and support efforts to find and stop human trafficking.
