Nevada’s U.S. Sens. Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, both Democrats, have joined a bipartisan group of western lawmakers urging the Interior secretary to fund sagebrush ecosystem restoration in the West.
The letter calls on Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to allocate funding from the bipartisan Infrastructure Law to the project.
“Sagebrush restoration will help a critical landscape in the western United States, one that supports vast biodiversity, contributes to the regional economy and is vulnerable to destructive wildland fires if not managed properly,” they said in their letter.
They also pointed out that the funding will create rural jobs, address conservation needs and reduce fuels. Interior, they said, has some $100 million available for fuels removal.
“We encourage you to enact a robust program that will have lasting benefits,” the letter said.
Rosen and Cortez Masto were joined by Democrats Ron Wyden of Oregon and John Tester of Montana as well as Republicans James Risch of Idaho, Mitt Romney of Utah, and Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming.
