Ten basketball players were named to the NIAA’s all-state academic team, which includes those who earned an unweighted 4.0 grade-point average last fall.
Fallon sophomores Carter Paul, Brady Alves and Kanigh Snyder, and freshman Braden Sorensen were named to the boys basketball all-state team. Oasis Academy senior Trevor Halloran, junior Casamaro White and freshman Fenn Mackedon were also named to the all-state team.
Fallon sophomore Ava Faught was the lone Fallon student-athlete to be selected to the girls basketball all-state team. Oasis Academy junior Tylie Norcutt and freshman Serenity Achurra were also named to the all-state team.
Oasis Academy softball sweeps VC
The Lady Bighorns swept Virginia City in a Saturday doubleheader - 8-4 and 7-0 - in Fallon.
Oasis Academy (7-1) never trailed, scoring three runs in the first two innings of the 8-4 win before a big, four-run inning in the fifth.
The defending 1A state champs scored in each of the first four innings of the nightcap to shut out the Muckers.
The Bighorns host Pyramid Lake at 11 a.m. on Friday for a doubleheader at the East Richards Street field.
Fallon boys golf sits in 4th
After two tournaments, the Greenwave boys golf team sits in the middle of the Northern 3A pack.
Fallon carded a 378 and 379 in the Dayton and Fernley tournaments two weeks ago, and it traveled to North Valleys and Reno this week. Truckee was the top team in the opening week followed by Fernley and Elko.
Fallon senior Owen Palmer is the ninth-best golfer in the region with an 87-stroke average. Sophomore Ron Lee is 19th at an average of 95, followed by senior Colton Tousignant (97), freshman Drake Reid (99), senior Lucas Durfy (110) and senior Ridgley Elmer (119).
FYB opening day
Fallon Youth Baseball, which saw more than 500 youth sign up for the spring season, will host its Opening Day ceremonies on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Oats Park.
The baseball league has been tapped to host this year’s 12-under regional all-star tournament. Fallon hosted the 13-under tournament last summer.
Greenwave Hall of Fame ceremony update
The Greenwave Hall of Fame ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 classes will be this fall. Nominations submitted this year will be considered for the Class of 2023.

Hucke to be honored by NIAA in June
Jennifer Hucke, the two-sport standout who guided Fallon to its only two volleyball state titles, will be honored by the NIAA in June’s Hall of Fame ceremony. Hucke was selected to the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2020 but the ceremony was postponed several times due to the pandemic.
