Nevada traffic enforcement agencies will be on the hunt in the two weeks beginning Friday, April 1 for distracted drivers.
Nevada State Police officials say distracted driving along with driving under the influence are the biggest causes of roadway crashes.
For this exercise, a spokesman says they will be on the lookout for drivers violating the state’s ban on handheld devices such as cell phones, MP3 players and GPS devices.
They urge that all such devices be turned off or set to silent while driving unless your vehicle is equipped with hands-free Bluetooth.
If the driver has passengers, they can answer any incoming calls but if the driver needs to call, he or she should find a safe place to pull over first.
Officials also want drivers to refrain from smoking, eating and drinking while driving as well as any other activity such as reading a map while on the road.
The distracted driving effort will run through April 11 with numerous local agencies joining state troopers.
