Western Nevada College celebrates 110 Jump Start graduates

More than 100 Jump Start students are part of Western Nevada College’s Class of 2022.
WNC’s 2022 Jump Start graduating class of 110 students represents 10 high schools and two academies. Many of these same students will graduate from their respective high schools this week or the next.
Jump Start grads represented Carson, Churchill County, Dayton, Douglas, Fernley, Pyramid Lake, Silver Stage, Smith Valley, Virginia City and Yerington high schools, as well as Oasis and Nevada Virtual academies.
WNC created its Jump Start College in 2014 as a means to help more students earn a college degree while also making it so more high school students could afford a college education.
The grads were recognized during WNC’s 51st Commencement, which included drive-through ceremonies on May 23-24 on the Carson campus and May 26 on the Fallon campus.

Nurses recognized at traditional Pinning Ceremony
Western Nevada College celebrated its 2022 Associate of Applied Science Nursing degree graduates on May 20 with its traditional Pinning Ceremony.
The 48-member Class of 2022 was honored by the college’s nursing faculty, adjunct faculty, Nursing Allied & Health staff members and WNC officials.
Awards were presented to the following outstanding grads:
• Academic Award: Justine Colgan
• Western Nevada College Regents Scholar: Ki'Hana Garcia
• Spirit of Nursing Award: Hannah Carr, McKenzie Peterson and Ivy Kent
• Nevada Nursing Student Association Nurse of Achievement Award: Austin Woods and Siara Freyer
• ASWN Outstanding Students of the Year Nursing Award: Austin Woods, Siara Freyer, Trevor Ammons and Jenna Beam
• Nurse of Distinction - Outstanding Preceptor from Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center: Amanda Kent, previous WNC Nursing graduate, Class of 2013
The ceremony concluded with the traditional presentation of pins.
Forty-three of the grads are already employed, including 18 at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and nine at Renown Medical Center.

Support people with disabilities at Journey of Hope event
The public is invited to attend Journey of Hope on Friday, June 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. The friendship visit is from Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, whose cyclists cross the country to raise awareness and donations for people with disabilities.
The friendship party is presented by Western Nevada College and the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and is being hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, 1870 Russell Way, in Carson City.
The gathering will include free food, raffle prizes, music and dancing, activities for children, and provide local disability resources and information.
