The Lady Wave’s two doubles tennis teams — along with the rest of the 3A North — had difficulties getting past The Meadows in Friday’s state tournament at the Plumas Tennis Center in Reno.
“I am very proud of these ladies and what they accomplished this year,” Fallon coach Maile Munoz said. “They preserved through some really tough matches to make it to state.”
The team of Thalia Mortensen De La Cruz and Kasey Lattin, which finished third in the regional tournament, put a scare in its opponent during the second set of the quarterfinal before falling. Fallon lost to The Meadows’ Elizabeth Donaldson and Elle Behkor, 6-1 and 6-4.
Fallon’s second team, Isabelle Nuckolls and Shiloh Pequeno, which was seeded fourth, fell to the state champions, The Meadows’ Miranda Paek and Beverly Wang, 6-2 and 6-3. The other two northern teams, both from Truckee, did not make it out of the first round.
“I’m happy that Isabelle and Shiloh were able to make it to state their senior year,” Munoz added. “I’m excited to see Kasey and Thalia work hard next year and get back to state and hopefully advance further.”
Volleyball
The Lady Wave saved its best for last despite being eliminated from playoff contention.
Needing some help from other schools in the 3A North, Fallon’s playoff hopes were dashed when Elko beat South Tahoe last Tuesday but Fallon exacted revenge the following night, sweeping the Indians. Fallon, which lost to Elko in five games during the first meeting, took care of business on Wednesday, winning 25-18, 28-26 and 25-23.
Fallon hosted Spring Creek this past Tuesday after the game was rescheduled.
Dayton, which lost to Fernley to end the regular season, still secured the No. 1 seed in this week’s regional tournament and will face the winner of No. 4 Truckee and No. 5 Elko/Spring Creek. No. 2 South Tahoe will take on the winner of No. 3 Lowry and No. 6 Elko/Spring Creek. The quarterfinals are Friday night at Hug High School.
Playoff qualification was determined by a points system that awarded one point for each divisional win and two points for each crossover win. The team with the best record in each division automatically clinched a top-two playoff spot. Despite having only nine points, South Tahoe was perfect in 3A West play. Fallon, which beat South Tahoe, finished with 13 points while the Vikings went winless against the 3A East.
Oasis Academy’s volleyball team was also eliminated from the playoffs last week when it was swept by Smith Valley, 25-11, 25-8 and 25-3.
Soccer
The Greenwave boys soccer team’s season came to end last week when it fell to Elko and Spring Creek on the road.
After a 3-0 road win over Dayton last Monday, Fallon was shut out by Elko, 6-0, on Wednesday before losing 8-2 to Spring Creek on Thursday.
Fallon finished fourth of six teams with a 3-5-2 record in the 3A East. Similar to volleyball, soccer’s playoff qualification used a points system. Fallon finished with 11 points ahead of Lowry and Dayton. Five of the six playoff teams came from the 3A West with no team finishing with less than 40 points. Elko, the No. 2 seed and only 3A East qualifier, finished with 27 points, two ahead of Spring Creek.
The Lady Wave soccer team blanked Dayton, 3-0, last Monday in Lyon County before falling to Elko, 5-1, on Wednesday in Fallon. Its game against Spring Creek was rescheduled for this past Tuesday.
Fallon entered its last game of the season with a 4-4-1 and fourth-place standing in the 3A East and will miss the postseason. Like the boys, four of the six teams going to the playoffs are from the 3A West but the final spot was up in the air between North Valleys and Spring Creek.
