CHS boys harriers ninth at big Calif. invitational

The Carson High boys cross country team put together another quality showing over the weekend in California at the Tom Laythe Invitational. Carson was ninth out of 28 scoring teams with 303 points. Sawyer Macy was the Senators’ first runner to cross the line, taking 25th in 17 minutes, 31.88 seconds. Sophomore Alex Miner and freshman Sean Thornton weren’t far off Macy’s pace, finishing in 18:11 and 18:20, respectively. Sophomore Tristan Rutledge was 61st in 18:41.98. A total of 227 boys competed in the varsity large school section of the meet. The Carson girls cross country runners were equally impressive, taking sixth place as a team. Freshman Hannah Budd was 20th for the Senators in 20:41.10, followed by a trio of underclassmen in Vea Miner (24th), Brianna Rodriguez-Nunez (26th) and Jinnie Ponczoch (28th). Madison Hager, Eleanor Romeo and Sydney Romeo were all inside of the top half of athletes competing in the varsity large school division. Senator girls tennis into regional The Carson High girls tennis team will get to host an opening-round regional matchup Monday after picking up the No. 3 seed as a team. The Senators, who posted a 5-3 overall record, will welcome No. 6 Galena (4-4) on Monday for a 3 p.m. start to regional play. Sierra Lutheran runs in California Sierra Lutheran cross country traveled to Folsom, Calif., on Saturday for the Tom Laythe Invitational. The girls raced first in the small schools varsity race. Saige Gregory set a personal record with a time of 23:03.73; Vanessa James ran 28:11.87 and Kailey Fitzpatrick ran 29:51.88. Gregory 's PR moved her up in to fourth in the Northern 2A standings. In the small schools varsity boys race, Chandler Ricks ran a time of 22:05.91 and Cameron Bourne ran 30:33.66. Dayton volleyball posts weekend sweeps The Dust Devil volleyball team met little resistance over the weekend with straight-set wins over Lowry (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) and Fallon (25-17, 25-23, 25-9). Riley Glynn had 12 kills and 15 digs against Churchill and another 12 kills and 17 digs against Lowry. Savannah Dyer put together 19 digs against Fallon, with Hallie Peterson contributing 15 during each match. Penny-Laine Vaelua and Kassandra Miller had 29 and 25 assists, respectively, in the two wins. “Overall, the Dust Devils have been playing well since their loss against Elko. I think it was a wake-up call to the girls after having such a long winning streak. I have high expectations for the rest of the season and look forward to the rest of league games,” said Dayton High head coach Alyse Fletcher. UP NEXT: Dayton (19-4, 3-1) will host Fernley (14-6, 1-3) tonight. Sparks tops CHS in boys soccer One of the top teams in the North was too much for a shorthanded Carson High boys soccer team Monday. The Railroaders came down to Carson and left with a 5-0 win over the Senators. After a quality first-half performance from the Senators, Sparks scored four goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to break open the game. UP NEXT: Carson (1-6-3, 0-6-3) will host North Valleys (6-2-2, 4-2-2) on Saturday with a shot at its first league win of the season. Senator girls soccer toppled by Reed Carson’s Addy Morgan and Alyssa Tomita each netted a goal over the weekend in a loss to Reed. However, the Raiders scored five times in the opening half en route to a 6-2 win. Senior Dani Estrada was credited with an assist for Carson in the loss. UP NEXT: Carson (6-4-2, 4-4-1) remains in the sixth and final playoff spot in the 5A North standings and took on Douglas (6-4-1, 4-2-1) on Tuesday.
