Dear Reader, I am a sucker for a heartwarming story about animals and the story of Piglet brought tears to my eyes. Piglet is deaf, blind, and rescued from a hoarding situation. The little pink pup is a double-dapple Dachshund-Chihuahua mix and looks exactly like Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.
Fortunately, a veterinarian named Melissa Shapiro adopted him with the goal of making his life meaningful. Piglet was a handful at first, screaming because he didn’t know where he was or how to maneuver in his environment. He brought chaos into her life.
Over time, he overcame obstacles to become a happy, confident, active dog. In fact, he has become a role model to children all over the world. Melissa made two educational videos of Piglet focusing on how he uses what he has, not what he was missing, and she posted them on YouTube. It wasn’t long before Piglet was a sensation.
One third-grade teacher introduced Piglet to her class, and they decided to use Piglet as a role model facing each day with a Piglet State of Mind. They also adopted Piglet as a Growth Mindset mascot because of his positive attitude toward learning, growing, and overcoming challenges.
The class now uses the phrases, “A Piglet State of Mind” and “A Piglet Mindset” when difficult situations arise. Melissa took Piglet to meet the class and it was a wonderful experience for everyone. Students had pig ears and everything was pink for the pig party.
Now many elementary schools have used the videos to teach students about tolerance, flexibility, kindness, and overcoming challenges. In fact, Piglet’s videos have become lesson plans and a book titled Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy, and His Family. When Melissa adopted Piglet, her goal was that he have a meaningful, productive life.
Hooray! Piglet has surpassed the goal post and achieved a dream powered by the Piglet Mindset. Perfect! You can see Piglet at http://pigletmindset.org.
