Lt. Gov. Lisa Cano Burkhead has filed for legislation she said will modernize and professionalize school boards across the state.

The bill draft would have each county commission appoint the school board president to govern the trustee members of the board.

In addition, the plan would give each city with more than 75,000 residents the power to appoint an additional board member to their county board to serve as a trustee. She said that would ensure there is an advocate on each board to bring the voice and perspective of their communities.

That would add four members to the Clark County School Board and three to the Washoe County School Board.

It would add one member to each of the other 15 Nevada county boards. The existing members are all elected to their seats.
