In 3A North regional tennis action last week at the Plumas Tennis Center in Reno, both Lady Wave doubles teams advanced to the semifinals and qualified for this week’s 3A state tournament.
No. 2 Isabelle Nuckolls and Shiloh Pequeno defeated South Tahoe’s Kalea Paine and Leliah Enterline in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5) and 7-6 (7). No. 4 Kasey Lattin and Thalia Mortensen De La Cruz won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1, over Wooster’s Peyton Wilson and Pietrina Spencer.
Nuckolls and Pequeno lost to No. 3 Bryce Manning and Paige Wilcox of Truckee, 6-3 and 6-2, while Lattin and De La Cruz lost to the No. 1 seed, Truckee’s Naomi Park and Sophia Wasson, 6-1 and 6-3. The third-place match saw Lattin and Mortensen De La Cruz win in three sets over their teammates, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2.
In this week’s state tournament at the Plumas Tennis Center, Mortensen De La Cruz and Lattin will take on the South’s No. 2 team, Elizabeth Donaldson and Elle Behkor from The Meadows, at 1 p.m. on Friday. Nuckolls and Pequeno will face No. 1 Miranda Paek and Beverly Wang, also from The Meadows.
The semifinals are Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the championship and third-place match at noon.
Singles players Makenna Blunt and Ashlynn Gilman both lost their opening matches. Blunt lost to No. 5 Kate Bouska of Wooster, 6-0 and 6-2, while Gilman lost to No. 3 Jill Kirgin of Wooster, 6-1 and 6-0.
For the boys, singles player Samuel Lords, the No. 7 seed, won his first match, 6-4, 2-6, and 7-6, over North Valleys’ Jon Herron. Lords, though, fell to No. 2 Lunis Rylski of Hug, 6-0 and 6-1.
The doubles team of Brody Allyn and Daniel Madera fell to No. 2 Ralston Pierce and Sebastian Guerrero of South Tahoe, 6-2 and 6-0.
Girls golf
In last week’s 3A state girls golf championship at Genoa Lakes, Fallon junior Hannah Benjamin was the school’s lone representative.
Benjamin improved her second-day score by eight strokes at the par-72 course in Northern Nevada. Benjamin shot a 112 on Monday and then a 104 on Tuesday.
Douglas won the state championship for the second year in a row, this time by almost 100 strokes over Pahrump Valley (665 to 754). Douglas’ Giana Zinke won low-medalist honors with an opening 80 and a 76 on the second day.
Cross country
Oasis Academy freshman Matthew Bird and Fallon seniors Cameron Christy and Gerik Wassmuth placed in the top 10 of Friday’s Dave Marson Trail Run at Sierra Lutheran High School in Carson.
Bird ran the 5,000-meter race in 20 minutes, 53.73 seconds to lead the Bighorns with a fourth-place finish; freshman teammate Jay Frederick ran it in 27:20.10.
For the girls, freshman Kayla Greenberg finished 13th at 39:42.33.
Leading the Greenwave, Christy ran the race in 21: 39.15 to finish eighth, followed by Wassmuth at 21:47.08. Sophomore Jacob Crane finished 16th in 23:21.73. Freshman William McNeill finished the course in 27:27.92 and sophomore Miles Henning ran it in 31:03.85.
The 3A and 2A regional meets are Friday at Shadow Mountain, near Reed High School in Sparks. The 2A boys, which includes Oasis Academy, will run at 10:35 a.m., followed by the 3A boys at 11:10 a.m. The 2A girls run at 1 p.m.
The top seven individuals from non-qualifying state teams will advance to next week’s state meet in Las Vegas.
Soccer
The Lady Wave picked up a 2-0 win over rival Fernley last Thursday.
Fallon traveled to Dayton on Monday and hosted Elko on Wednesday. It faces Spring Creek at home today at 3:45 p.m. for Senior Day at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
The Greenwave boys fell to Manogue, 8-0, last Tuesday in Fallon before tying Fernley at 1-1 on Thursday in Fernley.
Fallon is on the road against Elko (Wednesday) and Spring Creek (today) this week to conclude the season.
Neither soccer team will advance to the postseason.
