The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office has informed the Churchill County School District of an active investigation involving a former school district employee for embezzlement from a former employee.
The school district news release said law enforcement officers requested access to the individual’s records and files. School district administrators are fully supporting the investigation.
Sheriff Richard Hickox said his agency is conducting the investigation unrelated to the school district. He said the CCSO contacted the school district to see if personnel had seen anything suspicious.
“We are not conducting an investigation at or on behalf of the school,” he said in a text to the LVN.
Although the investigation does not include allegations of embezzlement from the school district, the release stated the superintendent, Dr. Summer Stephens, will take all necessary steps to verify no school funds were at risk or school properties misused as well as ensuring all financial and business protocol are being practiced to prevent misuse of funds.
The school district stated in the release it has engaged independent auditors every year to conduct thorough, annual audits to guard against embezzlements. The district will continue practices that ensure safe and secure handing of funds and property.
The school district said any questions involving the investigation should be directed to the CCSO.
