Interstate 580 in north Carson City will close briefly on Sunday, Oct. 2 so NV Energy crews can work on the overhead 120-kilovolt power line that crosses the freeway in that area.
Nevada Department of Transportation officials say three 20-minute closures are planned between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. that morning.
The crews will install marker balls on the overhead power line to improve visibility of the line that provides power to some 11,000 customers at Lake Tahoe.
That line was knocked out a couple of years ago when a helicopter struck the power line, causing a serious traffic disruption.
The roadway will be closed from Arrowhead Drive in Carson City to the Eastlake off-ramp in Washoe Valley.
Crews selected the early morning hours to do the work because that is when traffic is lightest. During the week, as many as 43,000 vehicles pass through that section of the interstate daily.
During the work, traffic will periodically be shut down for up to 20 minutes through that area. For the safety of community members and NV Energy crews, no through traffic is recommended near Hobart Road and alternate U.S. 395 in the Lakeview area.
The spokesman said the schedule is subject to change depending on the weather and other factors.
