There’s a new look to the postseason in minor league baseball, and the Reno Aces will be a part of it. The Aces, with a Pacific Coast League divisional title already clinched, will take part in the inaugural Triple-A Championship Series in Las Vegas, beginning Friday. The Aces (85-63) will face the El Paso Chihuahuas (85-65) in a one-game playoff for the PCL title on Friday at Las Vegas Ballpark. The winner of that game will advance to the Triple-A National Championship on Sunday, facing the winner of the International League’s one-game playoff between Durham and Nashville on Saturday.
All three games of the Triple-A series will be played in Las Vegas. Reno won the PCL’s West Division title by 14 games over the second-place Tacoma Rainiers. The Aces will be playing in their fifth postseason; they also reached the playoffs in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2017. Reno won three series in 2012 to finish as the Triple-A national champions. The series of one-game playoffs in 2022 replaces the Triple-A level’s more traditional series of multi-game series that had been held in past years. Recently, though, the postseason hasn’t been played at all — the entire minor-league season was a COVID-19 casualty in 2020 and the 2021 season ended with the final 10 games of the season counting toward a “Triple-A Final Stretch” championship.
