The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department presents two free writing workshops for the community on April 22 as part of the Mark Twain Days Festival.
The workshops will take place at the Carson City Community Center, Bonanza Room, 851 E. William St.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for adult writers of any level to learn from award-winning Nevada authors Suzanne Morgan Williams, Courtney Cliften and Nevada Poet Laureate Gailmarie Pahmeier,” the department said in a press release.
Early registration is recommended as there is a maximum of 20 participants per workshop.

Workshop No. 1 will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s entitled, “Nevada Inspirations: A Hands-On Writing Workshop Celebrating Our People and Places.”
“In this two-hour interactive workshop, you’ll develop a uniquely Nevadan character and then incorporate Nevada settings and landscapes as you create a story only you can write,” reads the press release. “Author Suzanne Morgan Williams will provide tips on creating layered and interesting characters, using settings and landscapes to move your story forward, with prompts and visuals to inspire your work.”
Workshop No. 2 will include Cliften and Pahmeier and take place 3 to 4:30 p.m. It’s entitled, “Sense of Place is Sense of Self and Community: Writing from Where You Are, Have Been, and Want to Be.”
This workshop is cosponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City and the Ray A. Isaac Endowment for the Arts.
“With some emphasis specifically on Nevada, this workshop will encourage participants to write honestly and authentically about how place matters,” reads the press release. “Whether it is the birthplace, the apartment or house we currently live in, place is a major factor in our relationship with the world. Acknowledging place as a basis of community can help us all feel less alone.”
