The Lady Wave softball team took down the defending champs in a three-game sweep last week before going 2-3 in the annual Reed tournament in Sparks.
Fallon opened the Fernley series with a 8-5 win on Tuesday before sweeping the doubleheader, 13-2 and 6-5, on Wednesday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
Four players recorded multiple hits in the Tuesday win with junior Reece Hutchings notching a home run and triple in her two-RBI effort. Junior Kiley Wallace doubled and singled with two runs batted in, and sophomores Maddison Keller and Taralynn Vershum each singled twice.
Sophomore Vernita Fillmore pitched a complete game and struck out nine.
Fallon won the series in convincing fashion in Thursday’s first game.
Senior Lydia Bergman and Fillmore each homered as Bergman drove in four on two hits. Hutchings singled and doubled in four runs. Sophomore Dana Buckmaster had two hits and one RBI.
Freshman Janessa Bettencourt pitched a complete game, striking out eight while walking two.
Not having the lead until the end, Fallon scored the game-winning run on a walkoff wild pitch with the bases loaded to sweep the series.
Wallace led the team with a three-hit, three-RBI performance while Hutchings and Bergman each drove in a run.
Fillmore pitched her second complete game in two days, allowing one earned run while striking out six.
At the Reed tournament at Shadow Mountain, Fallon defeated Atwater (Calif.), 12-2, but fell to Reed, 7-4, and Alhambra (Martinez, Calif.), 8-5, on Friday. Fallon lost to Chico, 6-4, but beat Carson, 10-2, on Saturday.
Fillmore, Hutchings, Bergman and Vershum each had two hits, with Bergman and Hutchings driving in two. Bergman hit a home run. Fillmore struck out eight in the shortened game (3 ⅔ innings).
Against Reed, senior Darci Owens and Bergman each had two hits and an RBI, and Buckmaster and Fillmore each drove in a run. Bettencourt took the loss.
In the loss against Alhambra, Bergman, Wallace and Vershum each had two hits with Wallace and Vershum each driving in two. Wallace doubled twice, and Vershum and Buckmaster each had a double. Fillmore and Rochelle Prentice combined in the pitching effort with Prentice allowing eight earned runs.
In Saturday’s loss to Chico, Bergman and Wallace each had multiple hits with Bergman going perfect at the plate in three appearances, including a home run – her eighth of the season and 33rd of her career – and two doubles. She led the team with two RBIs, and Hutchings and Wallace each had one. Fillmore recorded the loss in the circle, striking out seven and walking three in 4.2 innings.
Fallon ended the tournament with a win over Carson, a 5A school.
Fillmore, who pitched and recorded the win, led the team with a three-RBI performance. Keller and Prentice had two hits with Prentice also collecting two RBIs. Tutie Ames, Bergman, Hutchings and Vershum each had an RBI.
