Douglas softball dominates weekend slate

The Douglas High softball team went 5-1 over a six-game span on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers defeated Newark Memorial (5-4), Galena (4-1), James Logan (6-1), McQueen (5-0) and Carson (12-0). Douglas’ lone loss came against Sutter by a 3-1 final.

Mackenzie Willis fanned 10 hitters against Newark, six against Galena, nine versus James Logan and four more against McQueen.

At the plate, Haley Wilkinson led the efforts, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs against Newark.

In the win over Galena, Zora Simpson went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, while Bre Williams drove in a pair of runs.

Talia Tretton, Dakota Till and Simpson all homered in the Tigers’ win over James Logan.

Ava Delaney was a perfect 2-for-2 against McQueen while Wilkinson and Williams each had two RBIs.

Lastly against Carson, Cam McClelland was 2-for-2 with a grand slam while Maddie Gooch drove in three runs.


Douglas baseball caps busy week

The Douglas high baseball team went 2-3, playing five games in the span of six days.

Douglas toppled Reed (3-1) and Reno (8-0) before falling to Damonte Ranch (12-1), Reno (6-0) and Bishop Manogue (15-5).

Duncan DeLange punched out six batters over five innings in the win over Reed.

Jeffrey Peters and Keegan Freeman each knocked in a run.

In the 8-0 win over Reno, Kaden McIver continued to be lights out, with 10 strikeouts over seven innings and allowing just one hit.

Peters and Carter Bleeker drove in three runs apiece in the win.

Thomas Young knocked in the lone run in the loss to Damonte Ranch while Sean Lemming was the only Tiger hitter to piece together two hits in the rematch against the Huskies Saturday.

Young and Bleeker each had two hits in Monday’s loss to Bishop Manogue.


Douglas girls track finishes top three in weekend invite

The Douglas High girls track and field team finished in third as a unit at the Reed-Sparks Rotary Invite over the weekend.

Megan Strand continued to dominate in the throws, setting a personal record mark of just over 33 feet in the shot put to take first place.

Strand was third in the discus with a throw of 95-5.

Sophie Marchut was third in the shot put with a mark of 32-8.25 and fifth in the discus, throwing 90-3.

Elizabeth Gneiting and Ava Coons were third and fifth, respectively, in the high jump.

Coons was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 17.58. She also took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.32.

Logan Karwoski and Grace Strabala were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Karwoski set a season record with a jump of 15 feet even.

Gneiting took third in the triple jump, measuring a leap of 32 feet, 10 inches.

In the 100-meter dahs, Strabala took fifth place in 13.28 while Bliss Moody was sixth in 13.35.

Strabala took seventh in the 200 in 29.09.

Douglas 4x100 relay team of Kaylee Bradford, Strabala, Gneiting and Moody took second lace in 51.89.

Senior AJ Thurston was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.48 while Connor Jackson was eighth in 11.74.

Jackson was eighth in the long jump, with a mark of 18-11.5.

Thurston also put together a third place finish in the 200 in 23.14.

Joel Nord was ninth for the Tigers in the 800, setting a PR in 2:14.82.

Luke Davis and Jackson Davis were eighth and tenth, respectively, in the 1,600 before finishing sixth and seventh in the 3,200.

The Tigers’ 4x100 relay squad of Mateo Esquivel, Joshua Nelson, Jackson and Thurston were second in 44.84, finishing four-tenths of a second behind the winning team from Bishop Manogue.

In the 4x4, Douglas took third as Zakery Weddell, Kevin O’Connell, Nelson and Thurston combined for a time of 3:41.97.

In the distance medley relay, Dennis Jorgensen, Jacob Hill, Jackson Davis and Sage Spencer took fourth in 12:46.30.

Kyle Koontz set a personal record in the shot put, throwing 40 feet, nine inches.

Rock Gignac was seventh in the triple jump with a trio of leaps measuring 38-8.
