The town government movement which we have been agitating, and toward the accomplishment of which sheriff Swift has been devoting much of his spare time for a day or two past is going to prevail. The fact is, hardly anybody is opposed to it now that it is known that the expenses will be so light. Our board of county commissioners are to enact the ordinances necessary to the better handling of the affairs of the town.

The Bulletin says: It covers a large section valuable for mineral, timber, and agriculture, and is in reality of no benefit to the few hundreds of Indians that live on or near it. It is expected that a change will be affected in the telephone company’s service in this city today. Roger Hetderich, the present night operator, will have charge of the lines and Miss Lile Burk will succeed him as night operator.

Fire that started from an unknown cause in a Goldfield cottage at 2 p.m. was not brought under control until about 7 p.m., after the Catholic Church had been destroyed and between 20 and 30 homes had burned down or were partially destroyed. No lives were lost, but several invalids were carried away from their homes. About 175 enlisted men from the Tonopah air base helped fight the flames.

The executive committee appointed by the mass meeting of citizens to arrange for the reception of President Roosevelt held a meeting Monday evening. Appointed to the committee on finance was Geo. H. Meyers, Ed. J. Walsh, and S.B. Cohen.

A general salvage collection day has been set for Sunday by the Ormsby County salvage committee. The representatives of all organizations participating will leave the salvage depot at 8:30 o’clock. The Lions and Rotary clubs will collect within the city limits and will be assisted by the Boy Scouts. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 20-30 Club will take all the territory west of the highway. The American Legion will take the area east of the Highway. The United Spanish War Veterans will do the sorting of material as it is unloaded at the depot.

Carson City High School business teacher Muriel Gamble has been selected as district Teacher of the Year. Gamble has been teaching in Carson City since 1964.

The new caboose cars on the V.&T. R.R. are very neat and commodious vehicles. They have a seat arranged on either side, like a horse car; are comfortably heated, and are provided with water closets. An express and baggage room is in one end; and along the floor are spittoons, let into the planking and level therewith — not very sightless things, but necessary; and in this instance much better than if thy were liable to be tumbled about by the jarring of the train.

A drive to make Nevada the first “V-State” will be launched soon. High Shamberger, state director of civil defense, today outlined plans to have at least 60 percent of the state communities qualify as V-communities. The drive will be launched with a campaign designated as “Victory Home week for Nevada.”
