Senior Spotlight: Maria Garcia-Carrillo
Finishing early, Oasis Academy College Prep student Maria Garcia-Carrillo is ready to tackle the next challenge. Garcia-Carrillo completed her high school requirements in three years and will graduate this May.
“I pushed myself to graduate high school early because I knew the career path I wanted to take,” she said. “Graduating early gives me the opportunity to get on track with my dream career even earlier,” she said.
Garcia-Carrillo started attending Oasis Academy her freshman year of high school and that is her favorite memory.
“My favorite memory is meeting the teachers and the staff for the first time. I’ve loved every moment of it and I love that I took the opportunity to be part of the school,” she said.
While Garcia-Carillo doesn’t have one specific teacher she’d like to thank is grateful to the school and does have a class that sticks out in her memory.
“I would like to thank all the teachers at Oasis that have helped me throughout my time, but my favorite class would have to be government because Mr. Eric Grimes made learning about it fun,” she said. “It was just amazing, a great time full of laughter and jokes and learning.”
“My advice for future Oasis students is to have school spirit. It’ll make a more memorable high school experience,” added Garcia-Carrillo.
After graduation she plans to join the U.S. Army Reserve and eventually go into active duty.
Graduation information
The Oasis Academy College Prep Class of 2023 will graduate on May 25 at Barkley Theater. The Processional will begin at 7 p.m. Each senior will be given eight tickets for reserved seating for the ceremony to be passed out in early May.
“We are excited to have an indoor ceremony again,” added Rochelle Tisdale, chief academic officer. “We have so many talented seniors this year. It is bittersweet to see them leave, yet so exciting to see what they will accomplish in life.”
Learning about biomimicry
First graders have been learning about biomimicry. They were given the task of using a turtle for inspiration to create items that could protect them while riding a bicycle. Students came up with multiple ideas from helmets to knee and shoulder pads.
“The students really enjoy hands-on learning, and this was a great way for them to demonstrate what they know about biomimicry,” said teacher Sara Peixoto.
Inaugural baseball team has successful start
Crowds cheer, bats swing, baseballs soar, and, of course, spectators have the opportunity to enjoy their jumbo pretzels and soft drinks. Very few pastimes are as gratifying as a baseball game! Oasis Academy College Prep finally has the opportunity to partake in this tradition as students started their inaugural baseball season this year.
The new program provides additional options for students looking to participate in spring sports or wishing to participate in a program otherwise unavailable to them. Many student athletes have expressed interest and the team has had the opportunity to recruit a diverse pool of players.
Organized by Sean McNabb and Nasser White, the experienced athletic mentors expressed optimism regarding the upcoming season.
“I’m excited to see how the boys are growing as a team. The future looks bright for Bighorn baseball,” said coach McNabb.
Over the weekend, the Bighorns won two games in a double-header against the Yerington JV team.
